Salt Pilgrim: The Water Returned
Nations rise, fall. You roam.
A 1-bit text RPG where a whole world runs on its own, on a screen modeled on an old DOS file manager.
THE GAME
- Nations and factions rise, split off and collapse. Settlements are founded, grow and fall to ruin, and you can raise them again.
- Caravans and raids move prices. Every morning the newspaper reports wars, truces and shortages, and every old paper is kept.
- Talk, trade, steal. People remember what you did.
- Places are folders, people and things are files. Enter a folder to travel; delete a monster's file to fight it. Cast rm -f to shred, fsck to repair.
- You don't craft, you compile: a Turbo C-style build window turns raw materials into gear.
- Die and you get a core dump, then the screen rewinds you to your feet. Sail past the horizon; no boat has ever come back.
iPhone · Android · Windows · macOS — English and Korean — plays offline, no ads, no in-app purchases.
FOR FANS OF
Its living-world systems are inspired by Caves of Qud (CoQ): witnesses report your crimes, legendary creatures carry names, hunters come looking for you, items earn their own histories, and water is both money and a bond. Like Dwarf Fortress, the world writes its own history: settlements are founded and fall to ruin, factions feud, split off, go to war and make truces, and the daily paper keeps every story.
As in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, nations rise and fall around you, but you are one pilgrim, not a ruler. As in Kenshi, you are nobody special, free to trade, steal and earn a bounty. It plays as a text roguelike in the NetHack tradition, inside a DOS file manager in the line of Norton Commander and the Korean classic Mdir.
